Today we’re taking a look at survival knowledge from around the web, with some commentary to assist you in choosing what will be most useful.

From Willlow Haven Outdoor: 6 Strategies to Lighten Your Bugout Bag

Bugout bags are a staple of common sense preparedness, and Willow Haven’s tips are excellent for trimming some additional weight. The key thing in all of these tips seems to be understanding the difference between what you think you “need” and what you really need to survive for a limited time period. Ditching comfortable tents for plastic coverings, limiting clothing to the bare hygienic essentials, all of these tips focus on trimming the fat from your pack to the true bare essentials. I would personally pack two bags if I had the luxury: one ultralight pack with the minimal gear needed, and one heavy bag with all of the portable comforts you’d like to have. Just take the one you want when the time comes and then shove off!

From Koufos Emergency Resource: People Who Believe in “Absolutes” Have Not Been in Enough Danger

The author has a pretty good take on a common mindset issue both within and outside of the prepper community. It’s foolish to absolutely believe that a sunspot or an earthquake or economic collapse or zombie apocalypse will destroy the world and only prepare for that, and it’s just as foolish to ignore all warning signs and presume that life will always be as it currently is. The “Doomsday Prepper” shows demonstrated the dangers of “absolutism”, when certain people only prepared for one very specific scenario such as a pandemic but lacked even cheap and simple preparations for more general disasters.

Learning to use and reuse properly allows you to extend limited preps (and limited budgets!) during an emergency. This post gives some interesting uses for fruit peels from lemons, oranges and the like that could actually replace certain household chemicals or store-bought products for a time which was intriguing. After you check out this list, I recommend seeing if you could add a few more potential uses. It’s a great brain exercise to get you thinking in the proper direction.

From Directive 21: Soap Thieves: A Surprising Lesson About Prepping

Living in a more rural area as I do, the very idea of someone bothering to steal soap made me interested to see what the author had to say. Aside from explaining why, the article also provides an interesting modern insight into how alternative barter-type currencies could form around the strangest of products and goods. There is a lot of hearsay and speculation on prepping sites, so it was good to see some solid, experiential insight in this article. Give it a look and see what you think!
